Brenda Osnaya Alvarez, a 31-year-old Paralympian from Mexico, captured hearts around the world during the Paris 2024 Games by making one of the most memorable proposals in recent sports history.

On September 2, after completing the women’s PTWC triathlon, she held up a sign at the finish line, asking, “¿Te quieres casar conmigo?” which translates to “Do you want to marry me?”, proposing to her partner and coach, Jessica González.

This touching moment celebrated not only her athletic achievement but also the couple’s love, marking their third anniversary together. The couple shared the joyous occasion on social media through a joint post on Instagram.

The emotional proposal was a powerful reflection of the Paralympian’s journey; her path to the Games has been nothing short of remarkable.

It all began after a life-changing car accident in 2010, when she was on her way to a national roller skating competition. The accident left her with a broken spine and paralysed her lower limbs, altering her life trajectory in ways she couldn’t have anticipated.

However, instead of giving up, Osnaya Alvarez found a new purpose through rehabilitation, where she was encouraged to take up swimming. This initial step into the world of para-sports ignited a passion that would eventually lead her to paratriathlon.

Brenda Osnaya Alvarez’s dedication paid off as she began competing at the highest levels. She made her Paralympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where she finished fifth in her category, PTWC, which is for wheelchair athletes in triathlon.

This was an impressive achievement considering the competitiveness of the field and the challenges that come with competing in a sport that demands excellence in swimming, cycling, and running.

Her performance put her on the map as one of the most promising paratriathletes from Mexico and Central America.

Beyond her achievements on the field, Osnaya Alvarez’s proposal at the Paris Paralympics is part of a larger trend at the Games, where several athletes have taken the opportunity to express their love in memorable ways.
