Mad Men star Kit Williamson has released a statement confirming that he has recently become engaged to his partner of eight years, fellow actor John Halbach.

Williamson – who plays Ed Gifford in the popular series Mad Men – said in a statement: “We kind of resisted marriage at first because we were already committed to one another, but all the progress that’s happened over the last few years, and the likelihood of a favorable Supreme Court ruling in June, has made us really think about what marriage means to us and our relationship. To deny our right to get married is to deny our relationship’s validity.”

They gave a joint interview to Out, revealing how the proposal happened and what their plans are for the future.

Halbach proposed to Williamson in their new New York apartment, saying: “He opened up the door to my proposal magic, but he was talking over his shoulder and didn’t see that there were fifty candles and a light-up sign and mood lighting.”

They have yet to decide on a location for their wedding, be it LA, New York or somewhere further afield, as their family and friends are spread across the country.

Williamson said: “His family is in Minnesota, mine’s in Mississippi. It’s kind of not convenient for anybody, so maybe we’ll just go to none of the above and have a destination wedding!”
