According to the latest Irish Times poll, support for same-sex marriage has risen significantly in the past 18 months.
In the new poll, 67% said they would vote Yes in next year’s referendum, while 21% said No. The remaining 12% said that they were currently undecided. The new figures show a rise from an Irish Times poll conducted in November 2012, which showed that 53% said Yes, 30% No, and 17% undecided.
Younger voters were more likely to vote in favour of marriage equality, with 80% of 18 – 24 years olds saying that they would vote Yes. Only 13% of the younger age group said they would vote No, and a final 7% were still undecided.
The Yes vote still came out on top in the 65 and over age group, with 44% saying that they were in favour of same-sex marriage. 40% said they would vote No, while 16% were undecided.
The survey was carried out last week among a sample of 1,000 voters in 100 interview points in across all constituencies.
Across the board, women were significantly more in favour of same-sex marriage with 73% saying they will vote Yes, compared to only 61% of men.
In November 2013, Ministers accepted the recommendation of the Constitutional Convention to put the issue of same-sex marriage to a public vote. The referendum is to take place by summer 2015.
