Polish lawmaker, Anna Grodzka has announced that she will run for President in conservative Catholic country, Poland.
Grodzka is already the first transgender MP in the country and announced her presidential plans on Friday.
The 60-year-old told former filmmaker and publisher is backed by the Green Party.
“Yes, I’ll be a presidential candidate,” she told the Wirtualna Polska website.
Grodzka transitioned in 2009 and was elected Poland’s first transgender MP in 2011.
There are currently no openly transgender heads of state in the world, meaning that Grodzka – who is already the world’s only elected transgender MP – would make history again if successful.
Her candidacy is not expected to significantly affect the vote in May as President Bronislaw Komorowski enjoys a comfortable lead in opinion polls.
Parliament will announce the exact date of the election next week.
Anna Grodzka was the Grand Marshall of the Dublin Pride Festival 2013.
