The saga continues! A spokesperson for Vladimir Putin has denied claims by Elton John that the president phoned the singer to discuss LGBT rights.
We can’t keep up with this story!
It all started when Elton John said that he would “love to [meet with Putin]” to discuss Russia’s “ridiculous prejudice” against LGBT people, when he was speaking at an event in Ukraine.
According to Elton, Putin soon got in touch with the flamboyant singer after his public invitation. He posted the news on Instagram, under a photo of the notorious president.
He wrote, “Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today, I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia.”
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the phone call did not take place, but doesn’t rule out a conversation happening at some stage. “I don’t doubt that if there is such a request, the president will be ready to meet with Elton John among others to give answers to all the questions that he might ask,” he told journalists.
“But we haven’t received such signals yet.”
I guess it’s Putin’s word against Elton’s.
Despite it’s “gay propaganda” law and the widespread homophobic attacks, Putin claimed earlier this year that Russia was “not homophobic” and that it was just a label attached to the country from other nations.
“Russia recognises and does not infringe on the rights of non-traditional sexual orientation,” said Putin, at a meeting with human rights leaders, adding, “[the homophobic] label is attached by other countries.”
