GCN cover boy Sam Smith invited legendary Chic icon Nile Rodgers on stage to join him during his performance at V Festival yesterday, describing the experience as “surreal”.

Rodgers, who announced in a blog entry ahead of the performance that he is 42 months cancer-free after battling an extremely aggressive form of prostate cancer, joined the 22 year-old singer/songwriter for a performance of their collaboration, ‘Together’.

The 61 year-old guitarist and producer recently told the New Yorker of his desire to work on the much-anticipated new Madonna album, saying “If Madonna wants to work I am totally down, she is the most hard-working, most dedicated, most focused person I have ever worked with and I absolutely adore her”.

Smith, who revealed he was gay earlier this summer,  went on to perform a full set at the festival, including a stripped-down version of his hit Disclosure collaboration, “Latch”.
