Independent Irish duo Phoeno has just dropped the powerful new single ‘This Could Be’, a teaser of their upcoming album set to release in 2025.
If you haven’t yet heard of this dynamic duo, allow us to introduce you to Adam Matthews and Liam Corbett, two musicians from Dublin who, back in 2019, decided to form the alternative electro band Phoeno. This happened during the Covid pandemic, when the two long-term collaborators started going on long runs together in Phoenix Park.
At a time when artists around the world were being hugely impacted by the lockdown restrictions, the pair spent their epic treks talking about sounds, lyrics and themes. The name of the band comes from Dublin’s iconic Phoenix Park, which became the backdrop for this new musical entity. As they’ve previously stated, they write “songs out of our own necessity, there is an urgency in the expression.”
Their latest single, ‘This Could Be’, fuses the deep echoes of Irish roots with the luminous pulse of modern synth-wave. In the artists’ own words, “It’s a track born from the raw, unfiltered feeling of injustice – when you’re done taking the high road and just want karma to do her thing.”
Released on December 6, the song is accompanied by a music video that landed on YouTube on December 11. ‘This Could Be’ was recorded in the UK and Ireland with producer Richie Kennedy (The Murder Capitol, Fontaines DC and The Last Dinner Party) and mixed by John Catlin (Foals, Warpaint and Death Cab For Cutie).
The single is a taster of the sounds and influences that people can expect from Phoeno’s new album, which is slated for release in Spring.
2025 is set to be an exciting year for one half of this duo, Adam Matthew, as he gears up not only for the new album release but also for the highly-anticipated return of THISISPOPBABY’s international hit show, RIOT. The show that stole the hearts of the entire nation is set to come back to the Irish capital from July 17 to 20, for some amazing nights in Vicar Street.
