Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s secret marriage means the couple have reneged on their promise not to get married until all couples could.
Pitt told Esquire Magazine in October of 2006 that he would not marry Jolie until all couples in America could legally marry and in September of 2008 donated $100,000 to the campaign to strike down the Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage in California, reports Gay Star News.
Currently, gay marriage is only legal in 19 of 50 US States.
Pitt and Jolie – who have been together for nine years and have six children together – married in a private ceremony in Provence’s Chateau Miraval in France at the weekend.
Pitt had earlier hinted that the couple may not be able to hold out until the advent of full marriage equality, saying the couple’s children were eager for them to marry.
“It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot,” he told reporters just before the couple got engaged in 2012.
