Review: Magic Mike XXL

XXL

Magic Mike XXL may not win any Oscars this year, but if man-candy is what you want, this is your movie.

The boys are back in town; this time BIGGER, XXL in fact. Returning to our screens for the much anticipated sequel to Magic Mike are Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash and Joe Manganiello. Set three years after Magic Mike bowed out of The Tampa Kings, Dallas (Matthew McConnaughey) has skipped town to pursue a career elsewhere and the boys are left without a leader. Reunited with Mike, they hit the road to Myrtle Beach to take part in a stripper convention. That seems like a totally acceptable plot, right? Or lack thereof…magic_mike_xxl

It’s fair to say that the Magic Mike franchise is more known for it’s super defined oiled up pectorals and pelvic thrusts, rather than an enigmatic screenplay.  Expect music, lots of pecks and bulges, and some seriously suggestive dance routines to get hearts racing. In the main, it’s entertaining and refreshingly self-depricating. It very much knows what it is – an all out musclefest. Watch out for the vampire references from True Blood star Joe Manganiello and a particularly funny Backstreet Boys inspired dance routine.

It’s not all men, the girls are also out in force in the sequel with the addition of Elizabeth Banks, Andie MacDowell and Jada Pinkett Smith who balance out the man-heavy line up.

Its light hearted, doesn’t take itself too seriously – of course it objectifies men, but no one seems to really mind. Don’t expect this movie to get any best screenplay awards for it’s gripping story and plot twists, that is not what this movie is about. It’s all about flesh and fun. Man lovers of either gender are going to love this visual feast.

The ladies and the man lovers (includes me) are going to like it.

Magic Mike XXL is in cinemas Friday July 3.
