The first trailer for Roland Emmerich’s historical drama ‘Stonewall’ has arrived.

Roland Emmerich chronicles the 1969 Stonewall Riots in his new film, simply titled Stonewall. The director, known for action flicks Independence Day and Godzilla, said this film was a passion project and that getting it made was no easy task. He told Vulture that he had to lower his budget in order for it to be green lit.

“It was a huge challenge to make this movie,” he said.”If I had not absolutely wanted it, it would not have happened.”

The 1969 riots are widely regarded as the start of the gay rights movement.
