American fashion designer Tom Ford will include a transgender model in his Fall 2014 collection campaign, it has been revealed.
The Texan will include 24 year-old transgender Dutch model Valentijn de Hingh alongside Gigi Hadid and Yaya DaCosta in advertisements for the label’s Fall 2014 collection.
Ford is an advocate for LGBT visibility in the fashion industry, and follows in the footsteps of Abercrombie & Fitch photographer Bruce Weber, who shot 17 transgender models for department store Barneys New York Spring 2014 catalogue – a publication which also featured de Hingh. Weber spoke to Vanity Fair about the shoot earlier this year, saying “It changed my life”.
Discussing his decision to include trans models, Ford said, “The concept is individual style, which was the idea behind my first women’s show in New York, focusing on the personal, individual style of different types of women”.
The 52 year-old former interior design student was appointed creative director and designer at Gucci Group in 1994, with sales increasing by 90 per cent during his first year in the position.
He went on to win the VH1/Vogue ‘Best International Designer Award’ before opening his first Tom Ford store in 2007 on New York’s Madison Avenue.
