The kiss happened on Monday’s episode of ‘The Fosters’ between two 13-year-old characters, Jude and Connor – affectionately known as ‘Jonnor’ – following two years of friendship.
The Fosters tells the story of an interracial lesbian couple and their array of biological, adoptive and foster children.
As such a progressive show, it was only a matter of time before Jonnor sealed their innocent flirting with a sweet kiss. Although some online commentators have baulked at such young characters engaging in a same-sex embrace, The Fosters’ creators haven’t allowed it to deter them.
Same-sex kisses between teens have happened on shows like Glee, Teen Wolf, and another ABCFamily favourite Pretty Little Liars.
Bradley Bredeweg told TheWrap: “‘Could you imagine if this show was on when we were 13, 14, 15 years old?’ It’s that desire […] to be represented and to have the audience feel like they can see themselves in at least one of the characters.”
Peter Paige, of Queer as Folk fame and co-creator of The Fosters, aptly responded on Twitter to those who were irritated by the kiss.
If this #Jonnor kiss is stressing you out, I'd like to know how old you were when you had your first kiss? #FostersSocialHour

But many were happy about it, it seems…
Imagine how many lives this show might be saving? Queer kids seeing their sexuality positively repped on TV? Guys! #GaydyBunch #TheFosters
