Sam Smith has yet to release his debut album – In The Lonely Hour will be released on May 27 – but interest and hype surrounding the 22-year old is already a PR consultants wet dream.

The singer/songwriter rose to prominence in October 2012 when he featured on Latch, the infectious breakthrough hit of electronic outfit Disclosure. He later included the song in acoustic form on his introductory EP, Nirvana.

A year later, Smith was nominated for the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award along with the BBC’s Sound of 2014, usually a promising sign for a newcomer.

Cut to today and attention has turned to his personal life, with speculation mounting about the young artist’s sexuality after he told The New York Times that his aspiration was to be “a diva” and “a sex symbol” in the fashion of his icons George Michael and Elton John.

With the release of a new music video for his third single, Leave Your Lover, a particularly mournful ballad, we are treated to a tale of unrequited love with a twist. The clip, featuring a cameo from fashion model Daisy Lowe, has added fuel to the fire, with his fan base questioning “is this Sam Smith coming out?”

If this is Smith unveiling his gayness on the world, it has been done in an understated and classy way, a little like his musical output.
