The amazing team at Wexford Pride has announced a thrilling new event for the LGBTQ+ community titled ‘Pride Goes to Prom’. Set to take place on October 19, this second-chance graduation ball is dedicated to all queer people who were denied the opportunity to celebrate their school debs as they truly wished to.

As a voluntary organisation, Wexford Pride is committed to empowering, celebrating and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community in all its wonderful diversity. With a calendar of social events and support groups spanning the entire year, the organisation strives to meet all the needs of the community in the county and at national level.

Launching ‘Pride Goes to Prom’, the group invites all queer people in Wexford and beyond to join them in Hotel Curracloe on Saturday, October 19, to celebrate queerness and authenticity in a safe space. In organising this debs-style ball, Wexford Pride wishes to recreate one of the formative experiences that queer people often don’t get to enjoy in a way that affirms their identities and self-expression.

The theme for the night will be ‘Forest Fantasy’ and while it will mostly be for the decorations, people are invited to experiment with their fashion to adhere to it if they so wish. The event will also see the crowning of Wexford Pride’s first prom monarchs.

As described by the Prom Sub-Committee, “Love, acceptance, and celebration take centre stage. Dance the night away in a safe, inclusive space, surrounded by friends and allies. Whether you want to relive the magic or experience it for the first time, this is your night to shine.

“Dress up, be yourself, and create memories that last forever! This night is THE night for all of us in the LGBTQ+ community to embrace who we are in a safe space, surrounded by each other.”

Speaking to Wexford Weekly, Secretary of Wexford Pride John Cunningham-Ryan said: “Many queer folk have a renaissance when they figure out who they are, who they like and start living their authentic lives. The opportunity to have a do-over for a milestone event is fantastic & it’s fabulous to be able to provide this opportunity for our community.”

Rían Browne, Public Relations Office for Wexford Pride, also commented on the event, saying: “Often queer identity can become defined by our fight to exist despite forces that seek to question or deny our humanity as LGBTQIA+ people. Pride Goes to Prom speaks to the importance of drawing upon the relationships and community we build as queer people to create positive, fun and affirming spaces that celebrate reclaiming these formative experiences as our authentic selves!”

Tickets for the event are available here for €30.
