Throughout March, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra is touring Ireland for its new concerto Stephen Sondheim: Music & Lyrics – a celebration. The tribute will explore the most notable and loved work of the gay American composer and songwriter.

As one of Broadway’s most influential composers and lyricist, Sondheim revolutionised traditional sentimental musical comedies. Throughout his career of more than 70 years, he brought dramatic situations to the stage, brilliantly pairing his profound lyrics with unique and poignant melodies.

Sondheim had his first breakthrough as a lyricist in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story which opened in 1957. This became his first historical mark on Broadway, shortly followed by A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in 1962. The latter, inspired by Roman playwright Plautus, was composed and written by Sondheim. It established the composer’s prominent position in the field, as it ran for 964 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Not only did Sondheim bring amazing musicals like Company and Into the Woods to life, but he also left his mark on cinema and theatre by co-writing movies like The Last of Sheila and mystery theatre plays such as Getting Away with Murder.

Stephen Sondheim: Music & Lyrics – a celebration will go through many of these works, in addition to the likes of Sweeney Todd, Follies and A Little Night of Music. Christine Allado, Louise Dearman and Jeremy Secom will join the RTÉ Concert Orchestra under the baton of Michael England. The night will be a tribute to the genius composer and lyricist, who passed away in 2021.
