91% of the LGBT+ Community Will Vote To Repeal According To GCN Survey

Over 90% of respondents to a survey asking members of the LGBT+ community about the forthcoming referendum say they will vote to repeal the 8th Amendment from the Irish Constitution.

Respondents to a GCN survey will overwhelmingly vote Yes in the repeal the 8th referendum

“Abortion is a socio-sexual issue, as was marriage equality for lesbian and gay people. It’s about the definition and control of sexuality in our country.”

The survey was carried out by GCN (Gay Community News) for its Repeal issue, which asks members of the LGBT community why they are voting Yes.

The vast majority of LGBT people see the repeal of the 8th Amendment as a crossover issue, with many of them pointing out the situation for transgender people who can still become pregnant.

“I’m a transgender male. Technically speaking, I can get pregnant quite easily, and if I were to get pregnant, I would not be able to deal with that mentally,” 19 year-old BeLonG To member, Seamus Byrne (pictured above), says in the magazine.

“I’m voting Yes because as a bisexual woman in a long-term relationship with a man, I have all the same issues with the 8th that straight women do. I have always been and will always be LGBT,” says 38 year-old Sarah Hannah Maguire.

Just 5% of respondents said they would vote No in the referendum, with the rest undecided and a final 1% not voting. With respect to the issue of balance, GCN asked the group LGBTs For No to write a column, but it was unforthcoming.

“We’ve published the Repeal issue of GCN because people the LGBT community, in particular, know only too well what inequality and powerlessness over our own bodies has meant historically,” said Brian Finnegan, Editor of GCN. “Abortion is a socio-sexual issue, as was marriage equality for lesbian and gay people. It’s about the definition and control of sexuality in our country.”
