The hit song ‘Girls Like Girls’, which catapulted Hayley Kiyoko to fame in 2015, is set to become a feature film directed by none other than Kiyoko herself.
The song debuted in February 2015, and its June music video quickly went viral, resonating with audiences for its honest portrayal of first love. Based on the themes of the song and its story, the film tells a universal tale of falling in love for the first time, with a focus on queer representation and authenticity.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kiyoko expressed her joy at finally bringing this vision to life. “I have dreamt of this moment for 9 years,” she shared. “Over the past almost decade my priorities have shifted and evolved. I have never fought so hard for anything in my life. The tears, the setbacks, the sacrifices, the closed doors, the immense struggle to get a film made is another story in itself.”
Kiyoko emphasised her commitment to creating meaningful queer content: “Since I released ‘Girls Like Girls’ in 2015, I’ve made a vow to myself and to you all to do everything in my power to create hopeful queer content at the largest scale possible. The road map has never been clear, I’ve just kept believing that if I kept trying, that one day a road could be paved. We made it. It’s here. From a song, to a music video, to a book, to a feature film. WE DID IT.”

The film follows the release of the novel Girls Like Girls, which Kiyoko describes as “a love letter to anyone who doesn’t believe they are worthy of being loved back or that they can have a happy ending.” This expansion of her original story underscores her dedication to telling impactful, hopeful queer narratives.
Hayley Kiyoko’s feature film will not come as a surprise for longtime fans, as she continues to create across multiple mediums. Her second novel, Where There’s Room For Us, is set for release in 2025. In music, she recently released her album Panorama in 2022, followed by singles ‘Greenlight’ and ‘Somewhere Between the Sand and the Stardust’ in 2023.
