Mark Indelicato, the openly gay star of the HBO series Hacks and Ugly Betty, married his husband, David Watson, on Saturday, October 10, in a wedding ceremony officiated by his Hacks co-star Jean Smart. Videos were shared online by fellow castmates in attendance, including Hannah Einbinder, Johnny Sibilly, Paul W. Downs, Meg Stalter and Poppy Liu.

A clip of the wedding circulating on social media shows Smart delivering the vows, “Do you, Mark Anthony Indelicato, take David Joel Watson to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, in sickness, in health, for richer, for poorer, as long as you both shall live?” Indelicato jokingly responds, “Duh”.

Hacks was an immensely successful show, with Smart winning an Emmy for each season of the show, five in total, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The series has also been lauded for its queer representation with regard to both the characters and the cast. On the show, Indelicato plays Damien, personal assistant to Jean Smart’s Deborah, the legendary Las Vegas comedian.

Immediately after reading the pilot script for the show, Indelicato knew he wanted to be a part of it, noting the representation of LGBTQ+ characters. Speaking to Out magazine, Indelicato said, “They’re just existing as queer people; there’s not really this grandstanding coming-out story, which I think in and of itself is a huge milestone in LGBTQ representation. That their queerness isn’t drama, that it just is.”

The series also stars a queer lead. Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava Daniels, is bisexual, as is her character. Einbinder was recently seen in Jane Schoenbrun’s sapphic horror Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, with Indelicato attending the film’s Los Angeles premiere in support of his co-star.

Indelicato rose to prominence with his role as Justin Suarez on the groundbreaking series Ugly Betty, starring alongside America Ferrera. Justin was the nephew of the titular Betty, roughly based on the show’s creator Silvio Horta’s own experiences growing up as a gay teenager living with a single mother.

Despite the character’s stereotypical ‘gay mannerisms’, it was not until the show’s final season that his sexual orientation was addressed, something which mirrored Indelicato’s real-life coming out.

During the filming of the fourth and final season of Ugly Betty, Indelicato came out to his co-star Ana Ortiz, who played his mother on the show. After the series wrapped, he came out to his real mother, telling Out magazine, “I feel very, very lucky and fortunate that I had such supportive parents, and that [they] also didn’t make it a big deal.”

He added: “[They] were just so, ‘OK, cool. No doubt. Doesn’t define you as a human being. It’s just an aspect of who you are, of your identity. And that’s great, and you should celebrate that.’”
