Jane Fonda reveals her penchant for attracting gay men, one gay man’s marriage proposal, and that time she campaigned with Harvey Milk.

In an interview with PrideSource, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin speaks about their experiences with the LGBT community and their new Netflix show Grace and Frankie.

Fonda, 77, and Tomlin, 75, first joined forces in the uber-camp 1980s Dolly Parton-lead film Nine to Five. They have come together once more for the new Netflix show Grace and Frankie; Grace and Frankie are best friends whose husbands reveal, after years of marriage, that they are in love with each other and want to get married.

Speaking of her own experiences with gay men, Fonda said, “When I was young, I was the female that gay guys wanted to try to become heterosexual with. A very famous actor who’s gay – and I will not name names – asked me to marry him. […] And I lived for two years with a guy who was trying to become heterosexual.”

The popularity of Bette Midler, The Golden Girls and Cher in the LGBT community, the interview said, showed that though Hollywood is rampant with ageism, there has always been a love for older women among the gay community.

When asked about their popularity in the LGBT community – all older women’s place in the LGBT community – Jane Fonda became emotional. “Older women tend to be more audacious; they’re bigger and bolder and, god knows, gay men love big and bold, right?”

As outspoken LGBT advocates for so many years, they revealed their most memorable moments, such as Fonda campaigning with Harvey Milk, “He was the most joyous. […] The most lovable person. I was so happy when I was with him. And it was just so much fun going into those gay bars with him – oh my god!”
