Despite being hugely popular with the gay community, Nick Jonas explains why he doesn’t want to be called a ‘gay icon’.

 
 
In recent years, the  23 year-old former Disney star has been kind to his gay fans – from performing shirtless at gay bars, to playing games like ‘Guess The Bulge’ and taking on several gay TV roles. Nick says he loves his gay fans, just don’t call him a ‘gay icon’.

“It’s an honour, but I don’t think of myself as an icon,” he told l’Uomo Vogue. “There should be a lot more straight artists who don’t have a problem with having gay fans.

Nick portrays not one, but two gay characters in TV series’ – Boone Clemens in Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens and boxing Nate in Kingdom. 

“I’m really proud to play gay characters and I’ll continue to do so. I think it’s among the challenges of maturing as an actor”.

Despite his success on the small screen, Nick revealed that he’d love to go back to the stage –  “I’d like to go back to Broadway, but with something written by me. That’s what I really miss”.

Nick is best known on the stage for his portrayal of Marius in the 25th Anniversary production of Les Misérables.
