Gay Group Files Complaint Over Ronaldo Abuse

A Spanish LGBT rights organisation has filed a complaint alleging that footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was subjected to homophobic abuse by Barcelona fans last weekend.

The Obsevatory Against Homophobia (Observatorio Contra la Homofobia) lodged a complaint to the State Commission for an incident which took place during Saturday’s match between Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou.

During the minute’s silence for Barça legend Johan Cruyff, who died from cancer aged 68 last week, chants of ‘maricon’ (‘faggot’), directed at Real star Ronaldo, could be heard from home fans, reports Marca.com.

“These unfortunate and shameful acts are punishable according to the Sports Act (2007),” said Observatory director Francisco Ramirez in a statement.“Players and referees are repeatedly insulted with homophobic abuse, but there has still been no public sanctions, which could help to end the precense of these chants in Spanish football.”

Ronaldo has been subjected to an increasing amount of homophobic abuse in recent times. Last month while taking a penalty against Malaga, rival fans chanted “Sal del armario” (“Come out of the closet”) at the 31-year-old.

“Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo has been the continued object of insults and malicious rumours regarding his sexual orientation from journalists, players and fans of rival teams in order to humiliate, offend and denigrate a great football player.”

“It is incomprehensible that there is a double standard to measure intolerance in sport. Cases of racism or xenophobia have been acted upon with speed and forcefulness, yet homophobia continues to be ignored.”
