A suspected Islamic militant has been arrested over the murder of the an LBGT activist in Bangladesh last month.

Last month Xulhaz Mannan, editor of Bangladesh’s only LGBT publication Roopbaan, was hacked to death along with another man, in a flat in Dharka. Islamic State (ISIS) later claimed responsibility for the attack but the Bangladeshi government insisted that there is no ISIS presence in the country.

However, over the weekend police in Bangladesh arrested a suspected Islamic militant, Shariful Islam, for the murders, reports The Guardian.

“We’ve arrested one man in connection with the murder of Xulhaz Mannan,” said Dhaka police spokesman Maruf Hossain Sorder on Sunday (May 15).

“He is a member of the Ansarullah Bangla Team,” said Sorder, referring to the Islamist militant outfit suspected of carrying out a string of machete-based attacks.

Last month, the US ambassador to Bangladesh, with whom Mannan had worked, condemned the killings. “I am devastated by the brutal murder of Xulhaz Mannan and another young Bangladeshi,” said US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat.

“We abhor this senseless act of violence and urge the government of Bangladesh in the strongest terms to apprehend the criminals behind these murders.”

Mannan’s murder was just one of seven similar attacks since the start of April. The day before his murder, 58-year-old English teacher Rezaul Karim Siddique was also hacked to death while waiting on a bus. The attack was later claimed by ISIS.

This weekend an elderly Buddhist monk was also found hacked to death, this time in a temple in the Bandarban district.
