Maria Walsh, former Rose of Tralee, says there are not enough lesbians on the scene, or places for them to go.
Revealing that she is currently single, Walsh said the lack of lesbian bars is not helping. “It is not balanced,” she told the Irish Independent. “Whether it’s that lesbians aren’t out on the scene as much or we just don’t like being out in clubs and bars, it is really hard to find a lesbian bar. You have the George, but that’s predominantly gay men.”
She doesn’t see a huge difference from her time living the US: “It’s not just in Ireland, it was like that in Philadelphia too, very gay men-focused versus gay women, which I don’t understand.”
But perhaps the problem isn’t with the lack of venues, but rather lack of motivation: “I’m a bit of a loser when it comes to going out anyway,” the Mayo Rose admitted. “I can’t even tell you the last time I went out.”
Perhaps Maria is right and it is time for Dublin to get its own lesbian bar? Entrepreneurs at the ready!
