The Pantone Color Institute have developed a new shade of purple to celebrate Prince called ‘Love Symbol #2’ and ensure that his legacy is accurately reflected moving forward.

The newly developed colour is named after both Prince’s logo and his purple Yamaha piano, The Guardian reports.

“We are honoured to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one’,” said Pantone Vice-President, Laurie Pressman.

“A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2, is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style,” Pressman continued.

“Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”

The internet has naturally taken the news of the new Prince inspired Pantone colour extremely well, with people declaring their love of the new colour.

One paint company, Eicó Paints, has announced that they will match the colour for any diehard Prince fans.

One user declares that a new emoji needs to be created to match, tagging Apple in the tweet.

Gay Icon?

Perhaps best known for his song ‘Purple Rain’, Prince was, in his early days at least, considered a gay icon that stood for sexual liberation.

In his later years, however, his messaging shifted toward the more conservative.

The Atlantic reports that in the early naughties, Prince became a Jehovah’s Witness, which likely influenced his views on sexuality, sex and the message of free love that his music had spread.

Whatever about his political and idealogical stance on sex and sexuality, the new Pantone colour will allow Prince’s legacy to truly be immortalised.
