Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) is set to open disciplinary proceedings against Bayern Munich over a homophobic banner waved by fans.

German premier league team FC Bayern Munich is facing a fine of £50,000 following their Champions League win over Arsenal, where fans unfurled a homophobic banner before Tuesday night’s match at the Allianz Arena.

Governing body Uefa has already opened disciplinary proceedings against Bayern Munich after another banner supporting Kosovo’s application to join Fifa was displayed at the same match. The banner, which read, “Say No to racism, Say Yes to Kosovo” referenced a campaign to have the territory officially recognised by Fifa.

“Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Bayern Munich for an offensive banner at last night’s UCL game against Arsenal,” said Uefa chief of press Pedro Pinto this morning on Twitter.

He added that Uefa is yet to make a decision on the homophobic banner, which branded Arsenal ‘Gay Gunners’ and featured a crude caricature of German midfielder Mesut Özil next to a cannon.
