Transdr is a new dating app that allows trans men, trans women, non-binary people and gender queers to connect. The app was launched this week in the UK and co-founder Sean Kennedy described it “a new place for trans people who are looking for serious relationships.”

Grindr began offering users customisable gender identity and pronoun fields last November, while in 2016 a Tinder update made it possible for users to specify gender identities like “transgender,” “trans man,” “trans woman,” and “gender queer.”

But with reports of trans people sometimes being treated unfairly on Tinder, Kennedy believes a trans-specific app is essential.

“We feel like trans people were treated unfairly on Tinder from time to time,” Kennedy stated, according to PinkNews. “There should be an app knowing about them well and making them feel comfortable. Our team has a trans person who is dedicated to product and marketing. We will make Transdr transgender friendly with his help.”

However, readers of a story about the app on Huffington Post, have pointed out that some of Transdr’s marketing blurb is transphobic, saying that app included several derogatory terms such as “tranny” and “shemale” on its Apple Store landing page and its website.

A representative for Transdr said that the language was used “to improve the search ranking.”

Responding to HuffPost, the representative said: “Those terms … were used for SEO purposes because a lot of people search [for] them every day. We didn’t mean to offend people who care about this.”

Transdr says it will update its Apple Store description to remove the offending terms, but the process may take some time since Apple needs to approve any changes.
