Bohemian Rhapsody

The first of our queer movies, opening in Ireland in October, is Bohemian Rhapsody, a biopic of the late great Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury. The trailer makes just a few allusions to Mercury’s homosexuality, but we’re hoping the movie is up to its neck in it.

We The Animals

Dubbed “this year’s Moonlight”, this Sundance award winner is a hot tip for the 2019 awards season. Starring Raúl Castillo (Looking), it’s a queer coming of age film told from the point of view of the youngest of three boys in a family struggling on the edges of poverty. The Hollywood Reporter said: “We the Animals is a tiny film but mesmerizing in its own loose, dreamy way; it’s also a distinctive take on the discovery of queer identity.” There’ll be queer movies at the Oscars again, it seems.

Disobedience

Getting its Irish premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival last March, but not opening in Irish cinemas until November, Sebastián Lelio’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman stars Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, and follows a young woman who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home after learning about the death of her estranged father. She causes an upheaval in the quiet community when she rekindles a repressed love with her best friend – a woman now married to her cousin. As queer movies go, it’s an emotional rollercoaster

Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood

Based on the autobiography of pimp to the stars, Scotty Bowers, Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, this tell-all documentary goes between the sheets in Tinseltown to tell the story of the queer sexual peccadillos of Hollywood legends, including Noel Coward, Cary Grant (pictured above with his lover, Randolph Scott), Rock Hudson, Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracey and more. Queer movies don’t get more intimate than this.

Duck Butter

Naima (Alia Shawkat, Search Party) and Sergio (Laia Costa, Victoria) meeting at a club and hit it off instantly. High on their fast chemistry, the two women concoct a romantic experiment: They plan to spend the next 24 hours together, having sex on the hour. he latest film from Miguel Arteta, the director behind Beatriz at Dinner, The Good Girl and Chuck & Buck, Duck Butter is a blistering look at queer intimacy in a pressure cooker.
