A Canadian man had his social media accounts suspended after he posted a homophobic rant on his Instagram.
A member of the 441 Main bar’s security team heard Reese Buhr using derogatory language in the queue for the Winnipeg bar. They then refused Buhr entry which prompted him to share a rant in which he demands rights for straight people, while calling for the imprisonment of LGBT+ people:
“I fucking hate gays, let’s put that on the record. These fucking queers were illegal 20 years ago. My grandparents would say what the fuck, that’s fucked man. And I’m with them on that shit, this is bullshit. They should not be legal, they should be fucking illegal, they should be arrested. They should be fucking put in jail.”
Buhr continued his rant in the now deleted video:
“Since when do queers run our fucking country? Are you fucking joking me? So, it’s offensive to say the word ‘gay’ now? OK.
“Do I hate gays? Yes. Where are my fucking rights as a fucking straight person? I have rights, not only queers have rights. I have a right to get in a club.”
Speaking to CityNews, Nikola Maharajah, one of the bar’s co-owners defended the bar’s decision to refuse Buhr’s entry, as well as condemning the man’s subsequent comments:
“Fardad, who is one of our security guards, he is also my business partner here, was working the door that night. He witnessed someone [using] homophobic language. Obviously, he didn’t appreciate that, so he told the guy ‘Sorry, you’re not going to come in tonight’.”
The club’s owner continued:
“We really preach equality here. It doesn’t matter what race you are, what gender you are, or your sexual orientation. We just really want everyone to feel comfortable, and to be able to have a good time on the weekend. So if we let someone like that in, that’s going to ruin somebody’s night.”
In light of Buhr’s now viral rant, the nightclub has put up a pride flag in their window to show their support to the community. They shared this message on their Facebook page:
“At 441 Main we pride ourselves on diversity and equality. We will continue to defend your rights, making our venue a safe place for everyone because no matter who you are or whom you love, you are human and we welcome you.”
Buhr posted a follow-up video in which he apologised for the rant. His social media accounts, however, have since been suspended.
