Drag sensation Courtney Act has announced that she will support Australia’s Indigenous LGBT+ community with her appearance on Australia’s edition of Dancing with the Stars.

Courtney, who appeared on the sixth cycle of RuPaul’s Drag Race, has selected Black Rainbow as her charity of choice. If she is victorious in the competition her $50,000 prize will go towards the charity, which advocates for members of the LGBT+ community from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.

As it stands, members of the Indigenous Australian population are two to three times more likely to die by suicide than other Australians.

Jake Goblanksi, a youth member of the from Black Rainbow’s leadership division, spoke about the charity’s work:

“At Black Rainbow, we pride ourselves on ensuring our young mob feel they matter.”

Goblanski continued:

“Having Courtney Act show her support gives us comfort in knowing that the work of Black Rainbow, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQI people matter in the wider community.

“As young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, our identity is the essence of our connection to who we are and accepting the added identity of being LGBTQI can be a difficult process to navigate.”

Courtney Act spoke about why she chose to support a charity that advocates for Australia’s Indigenous communities:

“In 2019, it’s really important to be thinking outside your box. Minority identities intersect and I think the way we can get ahead is by reaching across the threshold and using our own privileges to support each other.”

Courtney, who will compete in drag with a male partner, wowed audiences with her first performance on Dancing with the Stars. Together with her partner Joshua Keefe, Act topped the leaderboard with their dance to Portugal. The Man’s track ‘Feel It Still’.

Courtney took to Twitter to share her perspective on dancing in a same-sex partnership on the series:

“Being on DancingOn10 is so much fun, but I also really love for the first time ever people will see a same-sex partnership on the show! I remember how validating it was the first time I saw two men dancing together.”

Act continued:

“We are just programmed in the world we live in to think that shouldn’t be a thing, but it totally should. Sure, I might be sneaking in under the radar cause I’m dressed like a pretty lady…but to quote the great Sasha Velour ‘Gender is a construct, tear it apart’.”
