The GAZE LGBT Film Festival launched last night, revealing the incredible line-up of queer cinema LGBT+ movie buffs can expect.
Running from August 1 to 5 over the bank holiday weekend, the Light House Cinema in Smithfield will play host to movies from around the globe alongside Q&As by the filmmakers and specially curated talks.
Sarah Williams, Chairperson of the Board of GAZE, told those gathered, “We share the belief that equality is non-negotiable and sharing the power of our LGBT+ stories is what GAZE is all about. GAZE is about visibility, advocacy, remembrance and sharing a vision for the future.”
Opening the film festival will be the documentary, Deep in Vogue, a riotous look at the Manchester vogue scene. Iconic photographer Robert Mapplethorpe gets the big screen treatment in Mapplethorpe, played by actor Matt Smith. Laura Dern and Kristen Stewart star in JT Leroy – a depiction of the infamous literary hoax.

A definite highlight will be Knife + Heart, a hugely entertaining high-camp highly stylised horror set in the world of gay porn starring Vanessa Paradis.
There will be a special spotlight on LGBT+ films from Latin America along with numerous short films represented across the shorts programmes in the festival.
Irish filmmaker John Butler will give a Q&A after a special screening of his film Handsome Devil, screened in partnership with the IFI’s Education Department and BeLonG To.
Included in that awesome lineup of live happenings will be an unmissable Queer Family Event featuring a special screening of the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid, and a Drag Queen Story Time at The Gutter Bookshop in Temple Bar.
Film festival programmer, Roisín Geraghty, said, “This years programme is intersectional, intergenerational, and as always, international. We really hope that audiences will come to support the festival and enjoy the selection of films and discussions on offer.”
