‘Hacktivist’ group Anonymous have responded to Orlando shooting by hacking dozens of pro-ISIS Twitter accounts and giving them a gay make-over.
The anonymous ‘hacktivist’ collective have been targeting ISIS-affiliated or pro-ISIS Twitter accounts for some time, usually posting pornography-related images and slogans such as “I love porn” on hacked accounts.
Following news of the Orlando shooting by an allegedly ISIS-affliated perpetrator, an Anonymous hacker called WauchulaGhost started to infiltrate pro-ISIS accounts, filling them with images of rainbow flags, non-graphic gay pornography and slogans such as “I’m gay and I’m proud.”
The pro-ISIS accounts which were hacked were all renamed ‘Jacked by a Ghost’ and most linked to CIA.gov, reports CBS News.
“We condemn the use of Twitter to promote terrorism and the Twitter Rules make it clear that this type of behavior, or any violent threat, is not permitted on our service,” a Twitter spokesperson told CBS San Francisco on Wednesday.
“Since the middle of 2015 alone, we’ve suspended over 125,000 accounts for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.”
WauchulaGhost told the Washington Post that he plans to continue hijacking ISIS accounts in the future. “I think we’re there to serve a purpose, at least I know I am,” he said.
“My goal waking up in the morning [is to] see messages from Daesh, telling me they’re going to kill me or cut my head off. The madder they get, the happier I get.”
This is not the first time Anonymous has taken on ISIS: following last year’s Paris attacks, the group has been trolling the terrorist organisation – posting mocking photos and hacking affiliated accounts – ever since.
