An anti-LGBT+ group in Brazil have used a picture of Trixie Mattel in their poster, which condemns “gender ideology” and demonises trans people.
The poster, which was shared by the group Nova Resistência Brazil (New Resistance Brazil) contains a Portuguese slogan which translates as “The ideology of gender is a step towards transhumanism and the dissolution of man”. Accompanying the slogan is a picture of the RuPaul’s Drag Race queen, wigless and applying her trademark make-up.
On the group’s website, their manifesto outlines their goal to “erect a New World and a New Country through a New Order built by a New Man”. Nova Resistência shared the poster on their Facebook page. Accompanying the image is a long passage in Portuguese that condemns the promotion of “gender ideology” in the Western World while associating transgender people with the “destruction of the human species”.
The photo of Trixie Mattel is used to accompany a larger message in the photo’s caption, in which the organisation provide a lengthy argument in which transgender people are demonised as the product of Western capitalism.
Additionally, the caption contains transphobic rhetoric, as it condemns “transhumanism” while comparing gender reassignment surgery to the notion of changing race or species:
“Without human essentialism, man can exercise his will to change sex, race or even species. And technological development is one of the instrumental forces that, when associated with liberal ideology, opens the doors of transhumanism.”
The caption continues to reinforce the gender binary as it highlights the perils of Western capitalism:
“In the West, it is no longer possible to speak of religion, hierarchy, family or state in the full sense of the term. The violation of gender boundaries (of which there are only two and linked to sex) is the necessary step for the destruction of the human species.
“Rejecting and combating gender ideology is not a question of ‘conservatism’, it is a question of defending the human species itself, and of authentic combat to liberalism.”
The caption concludes with Nova Resistência’s three-word slogan – “Freedom! Justice! Revolution!”
