My Head And My Genitals Don’t Talk Anymore is the latest creative project from beloved local drag artist Lavender. Launched this October, Lavender’s zine features poetry, collage, photography, and painting across 44 pages of glamorous print.
Lavender is a visual and performance artist with a strong repertoire of creative works across drag, design, and mixed media. This new zine offers an unflinching exploration of shame, body image, gender identity, and queer spirituality. Its honesty and authenticity are guaranteed to resonate with readers.
Lavender describes the publication as part mission statement, part self-portrait. “I started making this zine after a surprisingly cathartic visit to a sex dungeon. For the first time in my life, I felt truly in conversation with my body and aware of just how often we’ve misunderstood each other,” the artist stated.
The themes in the publication include desire, doubt, and the complicated beauty of existing in one’s own body.
The process offered Lavender an outlet for creative expression: “Poetry became therapy; art became release. I started writing down the wild narratives that looped in my head, the narratives I’ve spent years working through on stage with my drag performances.”
Through developing this zine, Lavender noted how the personal becomes the universal, and through vulnerability in creative expression, one can speak to collective queer experiences. “I made it for anyone who’s ever felt at odds with their body, their desire, or their own reflection.”
The zine was officially launched on October 27 at The International Bar in Dublin, with a stunning swell of support gathering online also. The zine is available to purchase on Lavender’s website, where you can learn more about Lavender’s design work (and any potential future issues!)
In speaking about plans for the future, Lavender is keen to explore further queer themes through creating a series of zines. But for now, “ I’m just enjoying seeing this one out in the world and connecting with people through it.”
