RuPaul’s Drag Race is currently in its 18th season, and it’s not slowing down any time soon. What began as a niche reality show with a cult following (and a distinctly blurry lens) has become a global sensation, with legions of loyal fans and dozens of spin-off versions. The phenomenon has launched glittering careers and showcased the artistry of drag to a mainstream audience, but part of its appeal lies largely in the hilarious, off-the-cuff memes and quotes that have resonated with Drag Race fans over the years.
With that said, we’ve put together some of our favourite Drag Race viral moments that will live rent-free in our heads till kingdom come.
“Come on, Tellytubby, teleport us to Mars!”
When the divas are fighting, a queen is left with a few choices, as evidenced from this viral fight in the first ever season of All Stars. You could join the pile-on, try to de-escalate, or play peacemaker. Or, you could take a leaf out of Tammy Brown’s book in season four and say something so outrageous that it will leave your co-workers unable to say anything but “What the f***?”
“I lost all hope today.”
When the season five queens were challenged to perform a charity single, the audience was gifted so many memorable gems. From Coco’s opening –”I lost all hope today”– to Jinkx’s never-ending high note to Roxxxy’s rallying “Where my people at?, to Jade clutching her diaphragm throughout, this challenge was the gift that kept on giving. Also, who could forget the debate over sequins/sequenced gowns that preceded it? Truly iconic.
“How’s your head?”
Drag Race queens are no strangers to innuendos, but sometimes they go straight over their heads. Pun very much intended. In season seven, RuPaul kept laying the groundwork for Miss Fame to answer “How’s your head?” with “I’ve never had any complaints”, but the fashion queen kept falling short time and time again, proving that sometimes it’s alright if your head is really just “fine”.
“Back Rolls!?”
Alyssa Edwards might just be the most memeable queen in Drag Race history, and that’s partially down to her beautiful reaction to Jade Jolie’s suggestion that she had “rolls all over the place in the back”. From her initial shock to the long pause and turn in her confessional, Drag Race herstory was made with those two words.
“F**k my drag.”
Ever feel that no matter how hard you work, or how many rhinestones you glue to your face, you still get overlooked? Boy, do we have a phrase for you. Simply take a page out of Kennedy Davenport’s book and say “f**k my drag”.
“Oh, y’all wanted a twist?”
Drag Race entrance lines offer queens a unique opportunity to make a strong impression, and no one understood the assignment better than Laganja Estranja. Entering the werkroom with a deathdrop and a promise to “get sickening” – this is how it’s done.
“I’m not joking, b***h.”
The rivalry between Coco and Alyssa will go down in the annals of history. It was fiery, it got ugly, but it also gave us some top-tier quotes, which is why we’re constantly quoting Coco’s “I’m not joking, b***h,” at every possible opportunity.
“Go back to Party City where you belong!”
Sharon Needles and Phi Phi O’Hara spent much of season four at each other’s throats, and they were not afraid to shade each other’s drag styles while they were at it. Case in point, when Sharon called Phi Phi a “tired ass showgirl”, Phi Phi wasn’t afraid to tell the edgy queen to return to her roots.
“What do you do? Successfully?”
Few Drag Race queens are able to cut a fellow queen down with just a few words quite as sharply as Bianca. In this season six exchange, Bianca claimed her question was “very fair”, although the jury might still be out on that matter.
“I didn’t die; I crystallised.”
The best Drag Race looks tend to have a lot of lore behind them, and this is certainly the case for Kennedy Davenport’s somewhat baffling choice for the Death Becomes Her runway.
“Miss Vanjie…Miss Vanjie….Miss…Vanjie.”
Not sure we need to elaborate on this one.
“Look over there!”
From job interviews to tricky confrontations, it’s always handy to have a trusty distraction to rely on. Need pointers on the subtle art of misdirection? Simply learn from Jaida Essence Hall’s “Look over there!” moment.
“I would never say that.”
Another iconic Drag Race quote and solid lesson to learn is the sheer power of denial. As Raven proved in season two, it doesn’t matter if there’s heavy video evidence to the contrary, just lie your way out of trouble.
“Well guess what Mimi, WE DID.”
Another iconic Raven quote came during the aforementioned Tellytubby pile-on, when Raven successfully conveyed her dismay at Mimi Imfurst being Number Third In The Voting.
“Is there something on my face?”
It takes a lot of nerve to stand up to RuPaul herself, but in season seven, Pearl did exactly that – and lived to tell the tale. Rather than sit in an uncomfortable silence or grovel, she looked mother directly in the eye, and uttered those six infamous words.
“I’m Roxxxy Andrews and I’m here to make it clear.”
Alsaka may have painted herself blue for the All Stars 2 performance of ‘Read U Wrote U’, but it was Roxxxy Andrews who stole the show with her final verse.
“I’d like to keep it on please.”
Another incredible display of nerve in the face of RuPaul came in season nine, when Fan Favourite Valentina was reluctant to remove her mask, which covered her lips, for a lip sync. Truly telenovela levels of drama.
So there you have it – 17 iconic Drag Race quotes that have altered our lexicon forever.
