Queering the Airwaves – Pride 2024: 50 Years of Resistance presented by Dublin Digital Radio (DDR) is slated for release on Wednesday, June 26. It will run during Pride until Saturday, June 29, platforming a range of LGBTQ+ voices, organisations, and activists to spotlight extensive queer histories of resilience and community.

To empower its members, DDR launched this collaborative project in 2024 to mark the 50th anniversary of Dublin Pride. The inaugural Pride demonstration in Dublin was organised by the Sexual Liberation Movement on June 27, 1974. After half a century of Pride, the broadcast programme hopes to reflect on the roots of the original movement and refocus on the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ liberation, with over 25 hours of queer airtime.

Queering the Airwaves promises a diverse range of talent in the lineup, from DJs presenting their first-ever broadcast to acclaimed DDR talent. Content spans lively dance floor mixes, illuminating queer histories, and trailblazing plans for a more radically queer future.

It travels beyond Ireland in shows like ‘Queer Liberation in Mexico’, which focuses on Terry Holiday, a politically active trans Mexican woman. The episode will also feature the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America and the role of queer nightlife as a form of political resistance.

Make sure to check out DDR’s website for the full schedule of episodes!

Shane O’Callaghan, Queering the Airwaves Programmer, had this to say ahead of the launch: “The wide variety of shows that were submitted as part of QTA this year is a testament to the incredible diversity of the queer community and queer experience. It’s vital that we continue to elevate queer voices and support our community.

“50 years of Pride has offered us the opportunity to take stock of the progress that has been made and also acknowledge the work that is still to be done. Much of QTA’s programming reflects this sentiment with explorations of queer history, political expression through punk music alongside moments of queer elation and joy.”

DDR is an independent platform founded by its members that is run democratically to provide an alternative media outlet to its community. Listen to Queering the Airwaves on Dublin Digital Radio here!
