A guide to the Heartstopper graphic novel universe

For those who can't get enough of the Heartstopper TV series, why not try diving into the graphic novels?

So you’ve watched Heartstopper Season 3 and/or read all the graphic novels. Maybe, like me, you are patiently waiting for ‘Volume 6’ (possibly the final volume) to arrive. What is a Heartstopper fan to do? Well, Alice Oseman has written a number of novels and novellas that are set in that world. Some have a connection to the graphic novels (This Winter, Solitaire and Nick and Charlie), while others have little or none (Radio Silence, I Was Born For This and Loveless). However, they all have the same coming-of-age vibe as Heartstopper and some explore LGBTQ+ issues.

The universe covers a 10-year period, and below is a timeline that lets you know where each book falls. While they were not released in this order and author Alice Oseman has stated that the novels can be read in any order, this may facilitate people, like me, who want to read them chronologically. I have also given a summary of the non-Heartstopper books and how they connect to the main series, where they do.

Heartstopper ‘Volume 1’
Starts January, Year One (Covered in Season 1 of the TV series)

Heartstopper ‘Volume 2’
Starts April, Year One (Covered in Season 1 of the TV series)

Heartstopper ‘Volume 3’
Starts May, Year One (Covered in Season 2 of the TV series)

Heartstopper ‘Volume 4’
Starts August, Year One (Covered in Season 3 of the TV series)

This Winter
December, Year One
Deals with the Spring children, Tori, Charlie and Oliver, during one Christmas. Winter has been tough for the children and Christmas does not make it any better.

Solitaire
January to February, Year Two
Covers Tori Spring (Charlie’s sister) dealing with teenage depression, a boy who likes her and an obscure group that organises pranks in school

Radio Silence

I Was Born For This
August, Year Eight
Angel Rahimi’s life revolves around one thing, a pop-rock trio of teenage boys called The Ark, who are currently taking the world by storm. She makes an unexpected connection with the lead singer, Jimmy Kaga-Ricci.

We hope that gives you a way to pass the time before Heartstopper ‘Volume 6’/Season 4, which will allegedly be the end of both the graphic novels and the series, respectively. It’s unclear if we will see an adaptation of any of the others – I’d be hoping for Solitaire as I’d like to see more of Jenny Walser as Tori Spring! We shall see.
