Actor Sam Reid has teased exciting new details about the upcoming third season of Interview with the Vampire, and fans of the gothic drama are in for a thrilling shift in perspective. Having focused heavily on Louis de Pointe du Lac’s emotional and often tragic journey in the first two seasons, the narrative is now being handed over to none other than the infamous Lestat de Lioncourt.
Since its debut in 2022, AMC’s adaptation of Anne Rice’s iconic novels has leaned fully into its queerness, far more overtly than the 1994 film adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. With its stylish direction, complex characters, and unapologetic sensuality, the series has earned acclaim for its bold storytelling, and now it’s ready to crank things up another notch.
Season 3 will be adapted from Rice’s second Vampire Chronicles novel, The Vampire Lestat (1985), and will place the so-called “Brat Prince” firmly in control. Speaking in an exclusive with Den Of Geek, Reid expressed both excitement and disbelief about the direction of the new season. “There’s so much left to unpack,” he said.
Where the previous seasons followed Louis (Jacob Anderson) as he recounted his vampire life to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), Season 3 shifts dramatically. With Lestat very much alive and not at all pleased with how he’s been portrayed, he’s ready to tell his own story, full of chaos and rock ’n’ roll. Yes, Lestat’s even forming a band.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Reid shared that the new episodes are “pretty wild”.
“I can’t really believe we’re doing it. Sometimes I’m like, ‘What the hell?!”
Reid added, “Lestat has an intention to express his views and his experience through music, music videos, and recordings. They are finding a wonderful, cool way to weave that through a lot of the denser parts.”
Reid has been working with the show’s composer, Daniel Hart, to perfect Lestat’s music persona and the series’ soundtrack.
“It’s been a really interesting way to approach a character, by coming in through the music to start with before we had any scripts,” the actor shared.
Showrunner Rolin Jones has also confirmed that Season 3 will have a completely different feel with Lestat “at the wheel”.
“If you imagine that Louis’ portrait of Lestat was about 70-80 per cent right, just imagine that guy suddenly taking over,” Jones said. “That’s what I want Season 3 to feel like.”
Of course, Louis, Armand, and Daniel’s stories are far from over. Tensions remain high, and while a reunion between Louis and his former lover may be on the horizon, a true romantic reconciliation remains uncertain.
One thing’s for sure: thanks to Sam Reid and Lestat, Season 3 of Interview with the Vampire is shaping up to be louder, bloodier, and hotter than ever.
