JoJo Siwa has opened up about gender on an episode of Celebrity Big Brother UK, initiating an honest conversation, saying that she has decided not to be boxed in.

The candid talk comes after the ‘Karma’ singer was caught exchanging private messages with housemate Chris Hughes after lights out, which is a rule break in the show. When asked to clarify what they were talking about in the Diary Room, the dancer broke down in tears and confessed how she feels about her gender.

Siwa stated that she doesn’t feel like a boy or a girl, and resonates best with her non-binary friends, saying: “I’ve met a lot of females, love them, don’t feel like I’m them. Met a lot of males, love them, don’t feel like I’m them – definitely not them.”

“I’ve met a lot of people in my life that are non-binary and these beautiful non-binary people are who I feel the most like.”

The celebrity then went on to say that it’s not something she feels she needs to say about herself yet. Big Brother then thanked her for being honest.

“Of course. It’s important to be honest and I think it’s important to show that it’s ok to not know,” Siwa answered.

Siwa has grown up in the spotlight and came out as queer in 2021. When she talked about gender with housemate Danny Curtis, he said: “I’ve been in this community for a while, and you’re growing up in a public spotlight. You don’t need to give anyone all the answers, ever. Ever. Even when you know them for you, you don’t owe anyone anything, ever.”

Fans praised JoJo for bringing non-binary representation to the show, but others were questioning if Big Brother nearly outed the star.

Some commenters on X said: “did big brother accidentally force jojo siwa to come out as non binary rn? #CBBUK,” and “loving the positive conversations surrounding non-binary people on big brother. thank u jojo siwa #CBBUK”.

Siwa and Hughes have been getting closer as the show progresses, with Chris defending JoJo to Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke, who famously stated to JoJo that if he stays “longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore,” and was caught saying slurs.

JoJo appeared pensive in the morning, with the two entering the Diary Room after Big Brother exposed them. When talking to Ella Rae Wise, Siwa said, “I’m the type of person that really needs approval from my mom and my partner… more so my mom.”

Ella went on to say that JoJo can’t be fulfilled in her relationship if she’s not happy with herself. The star agreed and stated that she has a lot on her mind, which was then revealed later on in the episode.

Celebrity Big Brother can be watched on ITV and across many streaming services, from Monday-Friday at 9pm BST or Sunday 10pm BST.
