Little monsters go wild over Lady Gaga’s record-breaking concert in Brazil

While the night was a resounding success, it could have taken a dark turn had police not foiled a bomb attack allegedly targeting LGBTQ+ fans.

Lady Gaga has broken the record for the highest-attended concert by a female artist. The Mayhem singer performed a free show in front of an estimated 2.5 million people at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Copacabana Beach on Saturday, May 3.

Addressing the crowd, Gaga exclaimed, “Tonight, we’re making history. Thank you for making history with me!”

In a social media post after the fact, she added: “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you.”

Gaga concluded the post, saying: “Thank you Rio for waiting for me to come back. Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.”

Lady Gaga’s record concert attendance numbers surpass those of Madonna, who performed at the same location last year to approximately 1.6 million fans.

Fans, friends and fellow performers have joined the 14-time Grammy Award winner in celebrating the historic moment. Queer artists like Pabllo Vittar and Greyson Chance commented on her Instagram post, with the latter writing: “our world is a better place because of you”.

One X user christened the night “GAGACABANA”, while another said, “thank you lady gaga for being the blueprint, for pouring your soul into everything you create. To witness your artistry is a gift — to be your fan is the greatest honor. We are so lucky to be alive at the same time as you.”

A different fan shared, “Lady Gaga has done more for pop music innovation than half the industry combined. While others play it safe, Gaga is the risk.”

Countless others thanked the star for the best concert of their lives, and urged her to come back to Brazil soon.

While the show was a resounding success, it could have had an entirely different outcome. Brazilian police say they prevented a bomb attack at the event by arresting two individuals who were part of “a group that was spreading hate speech and preparing a plan, mainly against children, adolescents and the LGBTQIA+ community.” The authorities report that those detained were recruiting participants, including teenagers, “to carry out integrated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails” in order to gain notoriety on social media.
