Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox is set to star in Clean State, an upcoming comedy series releasing on Prime Video. The story follows Desiree (Cox), a proud trans woman who, after two decades, returns home to visit her father Harry (George Wallace), an old-school car wash owner in Alabama.

Desiree’s homecoming sparks a series of humorous and heartfelt moments as she reconnects with old friends, coworkers, and romantic interests while navigating her complex relationship with her father.

“After being away for 23 years and, she says in the pilot, being in really dysfunctional relationships with men, she realises that she has to go back to the source of the first unavailable man in her life, and that’s her father,” Laverne Cox told Entertainment Weekly last year.

Meanwhile, the series also explores Harry’s emotional journey, which involves a lot of soul-searching to make the relationship between him and the child he once called “son” work. As unexpected circumstances lead to Desiree’s extended stay, the two, now almost strangers, must rebuild their bond, starting from scratch.

In her small hometown, Desiree finds everything remains the same… Well, almost everything. New love interests arise as she begins to rebuild some old relationships, while she also faces gossip from her local church.

The show is co-produced by renowned screenwriter and film producer Norman Lear and was one of his final projects before his death in December 2023. Also, Cox of Laverne Cox Productions, George Wallace, and Dan Ewen are creators and executive producers of the series.

The new show premieres on February 6, with the long-awaited trailer having just been released on Thursday, January 16. Get a sneak peek of this charming comedy, and hold on to your hats to enjoy another promising TV series featuring the remarkable talent of Laverne Cox.
