To celebrate it’s tenth anniversary, teachers from Ireland’s INTO Teachers Union will today meet president Michael D. Higgins at Arás an Uachtaráin.
For the past decade, the group has been campaigning for the equality of LGBT teachers in Ireland’s primary schools. Michael D. Higgin’s invited members of the group to his home in recognition of this landmark anniversary.
The “historic day” comes as politicians and groups are calling for changes to be made to Section 37.1 of the Employment Equality Act, which allows religious run organisations to discriminate against employees based on their sexual orientation or identity.
Chair of INTO, Anne Marie Lillis said, “It will be a historic day for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teachers of Ireland. We are truly honoured by the invitation to meet President Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin and it is particularly fitting that it occurs on the occasion of the group’s tenth anniversary.”
