With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to choose the perfect LGBTQ+ romance film to get you in the mood. Whether you’re looking for a drama, comedy or something a little more thrilling, this list is sure to give you good inspiration.

Dating Amber
Starting off close to home, Dating Amber follows two closeted Irish teenagers who stage a fake relationship to avoid questions about their sexuality. A close friendship blossoms between them, as they separately begin to navigate romance and their queer identities.

God’s Own Country
God’s Own Country is full of passion and acceptance that is so often left out of queer cinema. Following the story of a troubled Yorkshire farmer who crosses paths with a Romanian migrant worker, the film plots the course of their burgeoning love through trials, tribulations, and the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

Love, Simon
Love, Simon made waves in 2018 as the first-ever film produced by a major Hollywood studio to focus on a same-sex teen romance. On top of being a ground-breaking piece of queer cinema, it was well-received by audiences and critics alike, even earning itself its own spin-off television series, Love, Victor on Disney+.

Red, White & Royal Blue
Debuting in 2023, Red, White & Royal Blue is based on the novel of the same name by author Casey McQuinston. Showcasing the story of star-crossed lovers, who just happen to be the Prince of England and the son of the US President, this film has everything from impossibly high stakes and laugh-out-loud comedy to heart-racing sex scenes.

Anything’s Possible
Directed by Billy Porter, this coming-of-age rom-com follows a trans girl as she navigates senior year. As feelings develop between her and a boy in her class, she must decide whether to thrive, or just survive, her remaining days in high school.

Handsome Devil
If you didn’t get enough of Nicholas Galitzine in Red, White & Royal Blue, or Fionn O’Shea in Dating Amber, then check out one of their earlier queer roles in Handsome Devil. Set at an Irish boarding school, the film tells the story of Conor and his roommate Ned as they both grapple with their sexuality.

The Handmaiden
Although much darker than a traditional romance film, The Handmaiden is perfect for those who want to add some twists and thrills to their viewing experience. The film tells the story of a love affair between a Japanese heiress and her handmaiden, who is also a con artist.

Maurice
Based on EM Forester’s novel of the same name, Maurice recounts the tale of young love between two Oxford University students in the early 1900s. With the book written long before modern-day LGBTQ+ rights movements, it is especially pleasing to see that this film has a heartwarming ending.

Bottoms
In this hilarious comedy, high school best friends PJ and Josie start a fight club in an attempt to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Swimming with queer desire and laugh-out-loud moments, this 2023 flick has some very cute romance arcs at its core.

Unicorns
Released in 2024, Unicorns follows a drag performer and a single father who struggle to deny the spark between them. Together, they travel down an unexpected path of transformation, where they must question their identities and confront their individual truths.

Romeos
While Romeo and Juliet won’t appear on this list of LGBTQ+ romance films, we won’t say no to two Romeos! Especially if one of them is Lukas, a trans man who starts to explore romantic love when he finds himself attracted to another man, Fabio. While you watch their relationship grow deeper you also get to witness an extraordinary story about self-discovery and acceptance.

But I’m a Cheerleader
In this whimsically edgy romantic comedy, Megan is forced into a so-called ‘conversion therapy’ camp, which she dutifully follows, until she begins to fall in love with another camper. While ‘conversion therapy‘ is indeed horrid, have no fear, we promised a happy ending with this one!

Moonlight
Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture, Moonlight is a groundbreaking and timeless story of human connection and self-discovery. It chronicles the life of a young Black man from childhood to adulthood as he grapples with his sexuality.

That concludes our list of LGBTQ+ romance films to warm your heart. These are just some of the many amazing options out there, all worthy of a space on your watch list!
