A man who secretly filmed his family’s violent reactions during a discussion about his sexual orientation has received over $90,00 in charitable donations.

The video, entitled ‘How not to react when your child tells you he’s gay’ went viral after being posted by sex-columnist and It Gets Better Founder Dan Savage to his blog last week.

During the video, which contains no images of the family, just audio, family members are heard berating 20 year-old Daniel Pierce before violently attacking him.

“You can deny it all you want to but I believe in the word of God,” says a female voice during the 5-minute video. “And God creates nobody in that way. It’s a path that you have chosen.”

Pierce – who initially came out to his family in October – left home immediately after the attack, which occurred on August 26, and hasn’t returned since. He uploaded the video to YouTube later that night.

“I recorded the video because I knew something was going to happen and I wanted to protect myself in case I was harmed in any way,” he told the BBC.

In the aftermath of the video’s release, a Go Fund Me account was set up to help Pierce. To date it has raised $90,000, but Pierce has told reporters that he would like to give some of the money to youth facing similar situations.
