Online dating can be exciting and fun. Dating apps are meant to help users find a potential partner by establishing conversation and setting up ‘matches’ online. This ritual sometimes might involve sexting and following some dating app etiquette.

Unfortunately, there are many cases within online scenarios in which respect is violated. Some apps have already taken action. For instance, Bumble enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy against sending explicit photos, while Tinder promotes consent through educational videos.

However, as relationships progress, many users transition their conversations to more personal channels, such as WhatsApp or Instagram. This shift can sometimes lead to violations of the etiquette governing dating apps.

Despite not being dating-specific platforms, these social media channels should still be governed by the same principles of consent and respect. Below are several key guidelines for dating app etiquette, whether you’re engaging with people on a dating app or through private messaging.

Avoid asking invasive questions
The type of questions you should avoid asking very much depends on the level of confidence and intimacy users have between each other.

However, it is important to always bear in mind that something that might not be too personal for you can still be an intrusive question for the other person. If someone is not ready to share personal details, honour that and let them have the space they need.

Be honest about your intentions
This includes avoiding ghosting, breadcrumbing (referred to as a form of manipulation involving one person “feigning interest” in another) or anything that might make the other person get the wrong idea about what you want.

While empathy is very attractive, and it’s always difficult to turn somebody down, by being straightforward, you avoid misleading the other person or prevent them from thinking you have toyed with them.

Stay truthful
Even if we like to make good impressions, it is important not to cross the line, because lying about important topics sets a foundation that will complicate things in the future. Not to mention it is a huge lack of respect towards your date!

Don’t overshare
While the kind of questions that we ask should be taken into consideration, the same goes for the information that we share about ourselves.

Oversharing too soon can overwhelm the other person, particularly if they are still getting to know you. It’s all about taking it slow and allowing your date to learn about you gradually.

Always ask before sexting
Perhaps the most important piece of dating app etiquette, you must always ask before sending any kind of intimate images or before starting explicit conversations. Not everyone is comfortable with sexting, and it’s essential to ensure that both parties are on the same page before proceeding.

Report violations
If needed, report any violations of the community guidelines on the dating apps or socials you might be using. Most apps offer ways to flag harmful content or interactions, ensuring a safer environment for all users.

Hopefully, these dating app etiquettes will come in handy whenever you decide to start navigating the world of online dating with confidence, security, and respect.
