Sinn Féin has been officially banned from Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin. The decision follows a period of engagement between the Pride organisers and Sinn Féin party leaders.

Last month, Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin issued a public statement calling on Sinn Féin to clarify its position on the trans-exclusionary UK Supreme Court ruling and the ban on puberty blockers in Northern Ireland. This came in response to public comments made by Sinn Féin members that appeared to support both the ban and the ruling.

The organisers sought to determine whether Sinn Féin would oppose the implementation of the ruling in Northern Ireland, or whether they would continue to support the Northern Ireland Executive’s decision to ban puberty blockers and, by extension, whether they would support a similar ban in the south of Ireland.

In pursuit of this clarity, Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin undertook several steps, including:

  • Sending an email to Mary Lou McDonald’s office requesting a clear statement on Sinn Féin’s current and future position on the ban.
  •  Participating in a community engagement meeting with Mary Lou McDonald, David Cullinane, and other LGBTQ+ organisations.
  • Raising the issue in national media, including during Mary Lou McDonald’s appearance on The Late Late Show.
  • Holding a one-on-one meeting between Pride organiser Jenny Maguire and Sinn Féin representatives.

After this period of engagement, Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin announced they were not satisfied with the clarity provided by Sinn Féin regarding their position on the Supreme Court ruling. They also expressed concern over Sinn Féin’s continued defence of the ban on puberty blockers.

The group emphasised that participation by political government parties in their march is a matter they take seriously. They reaffirmed that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael remain unwelcome and now they have officially taken the decision to also ban Sinn Féin from their July march.

Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin is now shifting focus towards building the largest and most inclusive march yet, scheduled for July 12, by calling on activists, groups, and organisations whose values align with the trans community.
