‘The Sunday Times Giving List’ has named Sir Elton John the most generous celebrity in Britain.
It has been revealed that Sir Elton John donated £24.1 million last year, mostly to his AIDS Foundation, which is more than 9% of his total wealth.
This makes up part of £2.58 billion donated by the richest people in Britain, £180 million – or 7.8% – more than 2014.
Elton John established The Elton John Aids Foundation in 1992, after the deaths of friends Freddie Mercury and Ryan White, both of whom died of complications due to Aids.
John hosts both his infamous Oscars party and White Tie & Tiara Ball to raise money and awareness for those living with HIV/Aids.
Sir Elton has been outspoken on HIV issues throughout his career, most recently offering his support to Adrian Hyyrylainen-Trett, Liberal Democrat candidate for Vauxhall who was the first parliamentary candidate to come out as being HIV positive.
Along with husband David Furnish, Sir Elton said: “Elton John and David Furnish applaud Adrian Trett for his courage and bravery in publicly acknowledging his HIV+ status… He is a fine example that HIV-positive people live robust, happy and productive lives. We wish him all the best.”
Along with his own foundation, Elton John supports a number of other charities, including Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation, War Child, and National Youth Theatre.
Elsewhere in the list of most generous celebrities were the Sainsbury family – of the British supermarket chain – who were the biggest donors for the second year running. They donated £203.2m, which represents 40% of their total wealth.
The research was conducted as part of The Sunday Times Rich List which will be published this coming Sunday.
