The end of the year brings many wonderful things with it, including some time off to relax at home, enjoy a staycation, or even hop on a flight to somewhere you’ve never been. If that last option of travel is calling your name, here are some good tips to keep in mind as you plan your trip, especially as a queer person.

Selecting the Destination
Planning ahead when travelling somewhere unfamiliar is always a good idea, regardless of your gender or sexual identity. It’s important to consider what kind of vacation you’re hoping to take, who you want to travel with, and what your budget is for the trip.

For queer people looking to travel, take a look at the LGBTQ+ Equality Index to see how queer-friendly a country is. Some countries may have legal structures in place that ban LGBTQ+ acts or couples. Some countries do not have any official homophobic laws, but the general attitude towards queer people may be negative. Your safety comes first, so make sure to do your research!

Research Accommodation
Planning proper accommodations for travel is essential as a queer person. Whether you’re planning to stay in a hotel, hostel, or with a friend, make sure to thoroughly explore all of your options. Take a look at ratings and reviews before booking anything. If you’re staying with a friend or family member, communicate clearly your expectations.

Planning to save some money while travelling and stay in a hostel? Look at honest reviews and ratings on established websites about how queer friendly the hostel is.

Documents
If you are transgender or genderqueer, there are potential issues to consider when going through airport security. If possible, always travel with an updated ID that reflects an accurate or preferred gender. If you’re unable to update your ID, carry other official identifying documents or a note from your doctor.

Many countries are changing their laws regarding gender identification and queer acceptance for travel, specifically with passports, so spend time researching before heading to the airport.

Wardrobe
Some countries may adhere to a more conservative dress code, whereas others may be more open to different forms of self-expression. Be mindful of the cultural norms of different countries when you travel, and aim to dress in a way that is both respectful and true to yourself as a queer person!

Dating Apps
LGBTQ+ dating apps are a great tool to use if you’re looking to meet other queer people during your travels. If you’re travelling to a place that is not queer-friendly, be mindful that apps can be used to target or entrap queer people. Make sure a travel buddy has your location and knows who you’re meeting up with and where.

In Case of Emergency
Always know the emergency numbers of the country you’re travelling to. It can be helpful to know where your respective embassy is located. You can also research queer organisations and alliances in the country you’re travelling to, in case you find yourself in need of a safe space.

Most importantly, have fun on your well-deserved time off! Be safe, be smart, and be yourself wherever you choose to travel. If you don’t know where to start when planning your queer travels, here are some LGBTQ+ friendly destinations that would be a perfect getaway.
