The trailer for the critically acclaimed queer dark comedy Twinless, starring Dylan O’Brien, was released on Wednesday, July 30. Although the film isn’t slated for release until September 5, it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won an Audience Award and O’Brien received a Special Jury Award for Acting.

Twinless was written and directed by James Sweeney, who stars opposite O’Brien. The movie follows the story of Roman (O’Brien), who meets Dennis (Sweeney) in an emotional support group for twins who have lost their sibling. The two strike up a friendship over the death of their twins, an experience no one else can understand. Past secrets come to light, and Roman and Dennis’ bond inevitably grows stronger.

The film went viral after clips of O’Brien’s gay sex scenes from Twinless were leaked online and quickly spread on TikTok. The pirated videos were eventually taken down online for violating copyright laws, and the film was removed from Sundance’s streaming site, although not before sparking fan interest.

Twinless was praised as a “genuine comedic crowd pleaser and sophisticated examination of male friendship in the internet age” by Roadside Attractions co-presidents Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen, as reported by the Gay Times.

The two and a half minute long trailer teases a potential romance between O’Brien, who also starred in the LGBTQ+ film Ponyboi, and Sweeney’s characters. Although the character Dennis states “We’re just pals” when asked if he and Roman are dating, clips of them doing squats together and stuffing their mouths with marshmallows showcase the characters’ chemistry.

The film, which also stars Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham, Tasha Smith, Chris Perfetti, Susan Park, and Cree Cicchino, has accumulated a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and received widespread critical acclaim. It is produced by Lionsgate Films and Roadside Attractions and scheduled to come to American cinemas in early September, although it hasn’t been scheduled for international release yet.
