WATCH: Harry Styles Stops Show To Help Fan Come Out

Harry Styles, former One Direction member turned queer icon, helped a fan come out to her mother during his show in San Jose, Texas.

The singer noticed the fan holding a sign that read: “I’m gonna come out to my parents because of you.” During a song break, Styles read the sign aloud, asked the fan her name and where her parents were.

Grace yelled back that her mom was in a hotel nearby. Styles asked for Grace’s mom’s name and hushed the crowd. He yelled, “TINA, she’s gay!”. Styles waited for the crowd’s cheers to quiet before he shouted again, “Tina says she loves you.” He continued to congratulate the fan and express his good wishes for her.

“You’ll see that next time on a t-shirt, ‘Tina, she’s gay’,” Styles joked after.

After the show, Grace posted an update on Twitter. She had shown her mother, Tina, the video and came out to her as bisexual.

She wrote on Twitter: “I SHOWED MY MOM THE VIDEOS FROM TONIGHT. SHE IS OVERJOYED AND SAYS THAT “YES I DO LOVE YOU AND YOU CAN BE WHOEVER YOU WANT TO BE” SHE WANTS TO THANK HARRY FOR HELPING ME COME OUT and she has decided to come to LA Night 1 with me 🙂 Thank you @Harry_Styles”

Later, Grace continued to thank the singer on Twitter saying, “Thank you so much for creating an environment where I am proud to be who I am. Your continuous support of the LGBTQ+ has helped me come to love myself and feel safe.”

Styles has received extensive praise from the LGBT+ community for creating a safe space for all fans at his shows. He often waves around rainbow, bisexual and other flags at shows to offer his support. In the past, he has been an advocate for LGBT+ charities and organisations.

Fans took to Twitter to praise the singer and offer their support to Grace.

The singer’s own sexuality has often been questioned by the media. In a 2014 interview, Styles and bandmate Liam Payne were asked to name four things they thought were important in a potential lover. Payne listed “female” as a trait to which Styles said, “Not that important.” In 2017, in an interview with the Sun, Styles said he has never felt the need to label his sexuality.

“No, I’ve never felt the need to really. No,” he said. “I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself.”

Styles finishes his debut solo tour this weekend in Los Angeles.
