The first trailer has dropped for Honey Don’t!, a new lesbian film starring Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza. Directed by Ethan Coen, who co-wrote the screenplay with his wife Tricia Cooke, the dark comedy follows a detective as she looks into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church.
Margaret Qualley plays the titular role of small-town private investigator Honey O’Donahue, who recruits Aubrey Plaza’s cop character, MJ, to help her as she looks into the case.
The two are seen sharing a couple of scenes in the trailer. The first, which appears at the start of the clip, shows MJ giving Honey an address she asked for.
“Honey, right?” Plaza’s character asks as the detective walks away. “I love those click-clacking heels,” she adds.
A later scene shows Honey asking MJ, “Can you help me?” to which the cop simply responds, “Yeah”.

The film also stars Chris Evans in a prominent role, as well as Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, Lera Abova, Jacnier, Gabby Beans, Talia Ryder, Kristen Connolly, Lena Hall, Don Swayze, Josh Pafchek, Kale Browne, Alexander Carstoiu, and Christian Antidormi.
Speaking about the film to i-D, Qualley shared that she had to “be a little more suave than I am, more mysterious”.
“I tend to want to diffuse things before they even happen. Honey, she’s like honey—she’s skilful, she’s smooth, she is slipping in and out undetected.”
She added, “No girl needs to be taught how to be a detective. Women know what’s happening even when they don’t know what’s happening. I remember in my early twenties, especially, my investigative skills on Instagram were really out of control. It’s a combination of tools, craft, and gut instinct.”
Honey Don’t! is the second instalment in what is said to be a lesbian B-movie trilogy by Ethan Coen. The first was Drive-Away Dolls, released in 2024, which also starred Margaret Qualley.
On working with Coen and his wife Cooke, the actor said it has been “unlike anything else” she has ever known. “They respect and love each other so much. I love the world that they’re living in,” she said.
Regarding the third film in the series, she commented, “I have not read a script and I haven’t been contacted…But let the record show that if I’m not in (it), I will be offended and I will be upset.”
Honey Don’t! will have its world premiere in the Midnight Screenings section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, before releasing in theatres on August 22.
